The Six Pilates Principles

The six Pilates principle are centering, control, flow, breath, precision and concentration. Also, the Pilates method emphasises more on quality over quantity. Rather than many repetitions for each move, significant results may be achieved by completing each exercise fully and with precision. Below is an introductory summary for each of the Pilates principles.

  1. Centering – in Pilates means bringing focus to the center of the body (which is between the pubic bone and lower ribs) or the ‘core’. All Pilates exercises originate from the center or ‘core’.
  2. Control – in Pilates means completing Pilates exercises with muscular control. There is an emphasis on quality over quantity.
  3. Flow – in Pilates means completing Pilates exercise in a fluid and even manner.
  4. Breath – in Pilates means completing Pilates exercise using a very full breath. Joseph Pilates suggested thinking of the lungs as strong pumps to bring the air fully in and out of the body.
  5. Precision – in Pilates means sustaining Pilates exercises with awareness of each movement.
  6. Concentration – in Pilates means completing Pilates exercises with full commitment and attention to each movement.
