Choosing Pilates or yoga

The main difference between Pilates and yoga is emphasis. However, these differences have very complementary effects. Both Pilates and yoga develop strong bodies that can move efficiently, leading to greater wellbeing. Pilates and yoga can be adjusted to suit people of different fitness and strength levels. If you are having to choose between Pilates or yoga to begin with, you should try attending classes for both to see what suits you initially. Below are a few aspects of yoga and Pilates to look out for during your first class.

Breathing

As Joseph Pilates studied yoga in the development of the Pilates method, both yoga and Pilates work with the breath in creating conscious movements that are graceful and fluid. In yoga, there are breathing techniques that are used while performing yoga poses. In Pilates, the breath is used as much as possible by expanding the breath into the back and expelling air completely while executing a fluid movement.

Stretch and strength

Generally, yoga focuses on stretching (while certainly developing strength). Whiles the Pilates method creates length and flexibility in the body, Pilates generally focuses more on strength.

When combined, Pilates provides stability and control for yoga poses and yoga provides the flexibility required for controlled Pilates exercises.
